Is bone grafting after a tooth extraction worth it?

In dentistry, a bone graft is all about the procedure which increases the volume and density of the natural jawbone tissue. To be able to perform the treatment, an extra bone is added in the area of the deficiency with the required procedures.  The type of bone grafts includes the following:

  • Autografts: It refers to the bone that is taken from the body of the patient usually the chine or whatever part of the jawbone
  • Allografts: It refers to the donor tissue which comes from another person and can be bought from a licensed tissue or bone bank.
  • Xenografts: It is the type of graft which is gotten from an animal source and in most cases, it is the porcine or the bovine and can as well be obtained from a tissue and bone bank

The bone grafts during the time of extraction

It is recommended to have bone grafts when doing the tooth extraction especially if the implant for dental has been picked as an option for replacement. It is what is referred to as the ridge preservation graft and normally placed direct in the socket after the tooth is removed.

The bone material for bone grafting keeps the walls which are bony from having to cave in, providing a solid, firm, and foundation for the dental implant to happen in future. It is the type of graft which does end up to because extra discomfort during the extraction, as the site is accessed already for the removal of the tooth.

In majority of cases, the site will require to heal for about three to six months before it is possible to replace the implant.

Restoring the bone ridge after atrophy

For patients that have been missing their tooth for a long time, they will automatically experience some form of bone deterioration degree. The good thing is that, there is always a way of addressing the issue although the process tends to be more extensive as compared to a graft socket preservation.

Ridge preservation is so important.  In case the bone ridge collapse because of atrophy, then there will be a need for a ridge augmentation has to be performed. It is a procedure which adds width, height and volume onto the jaw.

If it happens that the bone loss happened in the portion of the posterior of the upper jaw, then the maxillary sinuses might drop down, occupying the space once occupied by the teeth roots. For the issue to be corrected, the sinus has to lift which can be performed.
