How Long is the Recovery from Breast Implants?

Increasing your breast size with implants is a major procedure and must not be taken lightly. Breast augmentation in Atlanta requires a lot of pre and post-surgery care and recovery. Like any other surgery, it is imperative to take care of your body and heed your doctor’s advice to have a successful outcome.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Every woman is different; and hence, recovery time can vary. There are several factors that can influence recovery time. This includes implant type, implant size, placement and even the surgical skills of the doctor who operated. On average, a full recovery can take as many as 4-6 weeks. Plastic surgeons in Atlanta recommend that you refrain from any kind of physical activity such as lifting heavy weights or even exercising  during the recovery period.

What to Expect Soon After a Breast Augmentation in Atlanta

24 Hours After the Procedure

Soon after the surgery, it is common to experience fatigue, soreness, nausea, sensitivity/loss of sensitivity in your breasts, or even tightness in your chest. It is not uncommon to notice bruising and swelling. This, however, will fade with time.

Once the surgery is complete, you will be required to remain in the post-operative room until the effects of anesthesia wear off entirely. Therefore, it is imperative that you arrange for a ride home from a friend or family member who can possibly continue to help and care for you a few days post-surgery.

During the first twenty-four hours you may experience some discomfort or pain, and it is recommended to take OTC pain killers as directed by your doctor. Your surgeon may also prescribe painkillers and muscle relaxers to alleviate the pain.

5-7 Days After Surgery

Once the first week has passed, you are likely to feel better. You may, however, continue to feel mild discomfort or pain. That said, the intensity of the pain is likely to have dipped. At this stage, if you choose you may return to normal activities after consulting your doctor.

Remember that you must continue to refrain from strenuous activities that can result in bleeding or irritation. Avoid lifting your arm above your head, as this can trigger a bleed. During this time, your breast implants will begin to set in place. Follow post-operative advice such as massaging the breasts, which will help reduce inflammation and relax the muscles.

3-4 Weeks Post-surgery

By this point in time, you are likely to feel little to no pain and bruising and swelling are likely to have reduced and faded. You can begin to engage in light exercise but it is advised to refrain from any strenuous activities. You will also need to continue to wear a post-surgical bra with front closure to allow for continued healing.

4-6 Weeks Post-surgery

At this stage, most patients have had a full recovery and can begin to resume routine activity. By this time, your breasts will not only look but also feel more natural. Patients are suggested to make an appointment with their doctor for an evaluation.
